14th October 2013: FRANK weeds out the myths from the facts

You may have heard lots of different things about cannabis but what should you believe? FRANK answers some of the most common questions we’re asked about cannabis.

1) Is cannabis safe because it’s natural?
A big myth about cannabis is that because it is natural it is safe for you to use. Whilst it can make you feel relaxed it can seriously affect your mental health. It can lead to isolation and a lack of motivation, which can result in you not taking part in your hobbies and interests. It can also affect your school work which may lead to poor exam results.

2) How many people smoke cannabis?
Not as many as you think! In 2012, 89% of 11-15 year olds had never tried cannabis.

3) Is cannabis good for you?
Cannabis or weed can make you feel relaxed and happy but it also has some serious side effects. It can make you feel very anxious and even paranoid. Using it has also been linked, in some people, to serious, long-term mental health problems. Visit the A-Z for more information about the effects of cannabis.

4) Is smoking tobacco better than cannabis?
Smoking anything can cause damage to your lungs whether it’s one joint a week or 10 cigarettes a day. Whilst cannabis can make you feel relaxed and happy it also has some serious side effects. It can make you feel very anxious and even paranoid. It can effect your concentration and this can affect how well you do at school.

5) How can I help my friend/relative deal with their cannabis use?
You can talk to them and explain why you are worried about their cannabis use and how it makes you feel. You can point out that there are local services and online services that can provide in-depth help and support for people using cannabis. They can also help and support people who are affected by someone else’s cannabis use.
